“Carson was famous for using his ‘Tonight Show’ platform to launch the career of young comics; Letterman continued this tradition, and Leno did not — stating the network “didn’t think they drew numbers.” This didn’t endear Leno to the fellow comics he rose through the ranks with, as well as new comics that never had a chance of being on this new incarnation of ‘The Tonight Show.’ Leno had a history as the guy that conceded to make everyone happy as far back as the late 1970s comics’ strike versus The Comedy Store (the basis of Knoedelseder’s book). Leno, who was the first comic to voice his displeasure with the lack of pay, was known as sympathetic to owner Mitzi Shore (Yes, Pauly’s mother); he was the “let’s just make her happy,” voice of the group. This was a strike Letterman gave his full support to, even picketing outside The Comedy Store the very same night after he hosted The Tonight Show’ for the first time.” —

I’m hoping a second, expanded edition of “Late Shift” is being put together right now, to chronicle all of this.

“

On Google: We did not enter the search business, Jobs said. They entered the phone business. Make no mistake they want to kill the iPhone. We won’t let them, he says… This don’t be evil mantra: “It’s bullshit.” Audience roars.

About Adobe: They are lazy, Jobs says. They have all this potential to do interesting things but they just refuse to do it… Apple does not support Flash because it is so buggy, he says. Whenever a Mac crashes more often than not it’s because of Flash. No one will be using Flash, he says. The world is moving to HTML5.

“The anonymous comments section of any major media site or popular blog will be so crammed with bile and bickering, accusation and pule, hatred and sneer you can’t help but feel violently disappointed by the shocking lack of basic human kindness and respect, much less a sense of positivism or perspective.” —Why are you so terribly disappointing?

“More and more, I’ve heard entrepreneurs say something like “I don’t want to talk to that firm because they are such jerks.” In almost all cases these are well-known, older firms who come from the era when capital was scarce.” — Being friendly has become a competitive advantage in VC cdixon.org – chris dixon’s blog

Eater SF: Just How Many More Ferry Building Spots Will Move Out? → sf.eater.com

Lots of changes happening - sad to see Tsar Nicoulai out of the Ferry Building but their new spot in the Financial District should rock. I also hear they’re talking to a couple of restaurants about sponsored lines of specialty caviar. Bring back the Iranian Golden Osetra and we’ll talk.

“But I guess where I was originally going is that nobody wants to write endings in television. They want to sustain the franchise. But if you don’t write an ending for a story, you know what you are? You’re a hack. You’re not a storyteller. It may not be that you have the skills of a hack. You might be a hell of a writer, but you’re taking a hack’s road. You’re on the road to hackdom and there’s no stopping you because stories have a beginning, a middle, and an end.” —DAVID SIMON - Vice Magazine

“According to a 2007 analysis of data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics by the Asbury Park Press, “the average federal worker made $59,864 in 2005, compared with the average salary of $40,505 in the private sector.” Across comparable jobs, the federal government paid higher salaries than the private sector three times out of four, the paper found.” —Class War - Reason Magazine
